A Falcon 9 rocket launched 13 demonstration satellites for a deliberate U.S. navy mega-constellation from Vandenberg House Pressure Base in California on Saturday. It was the 61st orbital launch of the 12 months for SpaceX.

The Falcon 9 lifted off from House Launch Advanced 4E at 7:25 a.m. PDT (10:25 a.m. EDT / 1425 UTC). After stage separation and ignition of the higher stage, about two and half minutes into flight the satellite-delivery mission entered a information blackout, typical for nationwide safety missions.

It was the third launch try in as many days for the mission. An issue with the Falcon 9’s engine 4 scrubbed the launch on Aug. 31 and on Sept. 1 the countdown was halted with 20 minutes left on the clock by a balky valve in a floor system.

The primary stage booster, making its thirteenth flight, carried out a boost-back burn to move again to Vandenberg for a landing at Touchdown Zone 4 a bit over 1 / 4 mile (0.43 km) from the pad it launched from.

It was the second of three so-called “Tranche 0” missions for the House Improvement Company (SDA), an organisation established by the Pentagon in 2019 to fast-track new house applied sciences. This primary section of launches will orbit at whole of 28 satellites to reveal an idea for a missile monitoring and knowledge relay community, often known as the Proliferated Warfighter House Structure.

Aboard the Falcon 9 have been 11 data-relay satellites, a part of what SDA calls the ‘Transport Layer’ and two satellites for the so-called ‘Monitoring Layer’. Ten of the communications satellites have been constructed by Lockheed Martin and one by York House. The 2 missile-tracking satellites have been constructed by SpaceX. Following deployment, the satellites will endure checkout and be maneuvered into an operational orbit about 620 miles (1,000 km) excessive.

The 13 satellites for the House Improvement Company’s second Tranche 0 mission are glimpsed shortly earlier than being encapsulated within the Falcon 9 payload fairing. Picture: SDA.

The primary ten satellites for the constellation have been launched from Vandenberg on Apr. 2, additionally by a Falcon 9. An extra 4 satellites are scheduled for launch on a mission later this 12 months hosted by the Missile Defence Company, in response to an SDA truth sheet.

“I’m very happy with the preliminary operation of the primary group of satellites we launched in April,” Derek Tournear, SDA director, stated in assertion. “Whereas the launch could be very thrilling information, it’s what we are going to reveal on orbit that basically issues— the power to supply the warfighter with tactical knowledge hyperlinks, past line of sight focusing on, and the missile warning/missile monitoring of superior missiles.”

With its 61st launch of 12 months, SpaceX has matched the whole variety of launches it achieved in 2022. A Starlink mission, scheduled for Sunday night, will break that file quantity.

“If tomorrow’s mission goes nicely, we are going to exceed final 12 months’s flight rely,” wrote SpaceX founder Elon Musk on the social media web site X, previously often known as Twitter. “SpaceX has delivered ~80 p.c of all Earth payload mass to orbit in 2023. China is ~10 p.c and remainder of world different ~10 p.c.” He added: “Aiming for 10 Falcon flights in a month by finish of this 12 months, then 12 monthly subsequent 12 months.”

That 62nd launch of 2023 is at the moment scheduled to liftoff from pad 39A on the Kennedy House Middle on Sunday at 7:25 p.m. EDT (2325 UTC).
