Intuitive Machines’ robotic Odysseus spacecraft snapped just a few selfies with Earth within the background shortly after its Feb. 15 launch atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket — and we will all examine them out.

“Intuitive Machines efficiently transmitted its first IM-1 mission photographs to Earth on February 16, 2024. The photographs have been captured shortly after separation from @SpaceX’s second stage on Intuitive Machines’ first journey to the moon underneath @NASA’s CLPS initiative,” the Houston-based firm wrote Saturday (Feb. 17) in a post on X that shared 4 of the images.

CLPS is the Business Lunar Payload Providers program, which places company science devices on personal robotic moon landers like Odysseus. These devices are designed to gather information that may help NASA’s Artemis program, which goals to determine a crewed base close to the lunar south pole by the tip of the 2020s.

Odysseus is carrying six NASA experiments and know-how demonstrations, together with six personal payloads, on its present IM-1 mission.

IM-1 wasn’t the primary CLPS effort to get off the bottom. That distinction goes to the debut flight of Peregrine, a moon lander constructed by Pittsburgh firm Astrobotic, which launched final month atop a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket.

That launch went nicely, however Peregrine suffered a gasoline leak shortly after separating from the rocket’s higher stage. The lander could not attain the moon, so its handlers steered it to a managed destruction in Earth’s ambiance on Jan. 18.

Issues have been going higher for Odysseus. The lander is wholesome and speaking with mission management because it heads towards the moon for a deliberate Feb. 22 landing try, Intuitive Machines has stated.

Odysseus’ varied programs are performing usually, together with its engine, which simply aced a vital checkout in deep area.

“Intuitive Machines flight controllers efficiently fired the primary liquid methane and liquid oxygen engine in area, finishing the IM-1 mission engine commissioning. This engine firing included a full thrust mainstage engine burn and throttle down-profile essential to land on the moon,” the corporate stated in an X post on Friday night (Feb. 16).

Success on the upcoming touchdown attempt could be historic; no personal spacecraft has ever touched down softly on the moon.

Odysseus’ liquid methane-liquid oxygen mixture, by the best way, can be employed by SpaceX’s Raptor engines, which energy the corporate’s large new Starship rocket. Starship, which SpaceX is creating to get folks to the moon and Mars, is being prepped for its third take a look at flight, which might happen within the coming weeks.
