Early spring heralds the rise of the galaxies, when over the following three months or so the prime-time evening sky is overflowing with a veritable treasure trove of shiny and delightful targets. Leo, the Lion, lies on the vanguard of this spring onslaught, providing because it does 5 Messier-designated galaxies and a handful of others that will put on the mantle comfortably.

Messier 95 and 96 are a really particular pairing of photogenic spiral galaxies mendacity below a level aside on the centre of Leo, about 9 levels east of Leo’s dominant star, magnitude +1.4 Regulus (alpha [α] Leonis). A small telescope will present the pair, whereas imagers can get nice outcomes, with wide-field photographs having the substantial bonus of together with Messier 105, a big and shiny elliptical galaxy, within the area.

M95 and M96 lie in Leo’s central area, east of Regulus. AN graphics by Greg Smye-Rumsby.

Observe them down

At mid-March from London, Leo reaches the southern meridian at round 10pm GMT, with the M95/96 pairing culminating at round 11pm at a beneficial 50-degree angle. The pair will be comfortably noticed for 3 hours or so both aspect of end result; sweep for them with a small telescope some 4.5 levels north-east of magnitude +3.9 rho (ρ) Leonis. M96 is the extra easterly mendacity of the pair (M105 sits below a level north-north-west of it), with M95 situated 42 arcseconds west-south-west of its companion.

Comparable numbers

They’re remarkably comparable in measurement and brightness, with Messier 96 (NGC 3368) being marginally the brighter than Messier 95 (NGC 3351), shining half a magnitude brighter at magnitude +9.2. M95 is barely bigger, with an obvious diameter of seven.4’ x 5.1’ versus M96’s 7.1’ x 5.1’.

M96 is a spiral galaxy (morphology class SAB(rs)ab) with, in widespread with the overwhelming majority of spiral galaxies, an elusive construction via a small telescope. It seems as round diffuse patch of sunshine via an 80mm (~three-inch) telescope at 40<M>x<M> energy, whereas a 150mm (six-inch) reveals its core to be a lot brighter than the encircling halo.

M95 sports activities a central bar (class SB(r)b) and is a superb-looking galaxy in deep beginner pictures. It’s seems diffuse than its companion via a small telescope, whereas an 80mm aperture can present a three-arcminute-wide glow, a tad bigger than M96 affords. A 250-300mm (ten- to twelve-inch) telescope can reveal hints of M95’s bar below good circumstances.
