I’m delighted that after a number of years of gestation, together with my long-time fixation with the concept of a hoop of fireside -last 12 months I completed this 16-minute-long movie poem in regards to the components that create our world.
The challenge takes its title from Greek mythology. Echo in Greek mythology is the nymph whose personal voice isn’t heard. She is cursed to repeat what she hears, thus she is ignored by all. This may be seen as an analogy for present-day attitudes to ecology disregarding the specter of extinction. Eco-activists echo what they’ve stated many occasions. Who’s listening?
For Ec(h)o, I developed an immersive set up supported by the Nationwide Lottery by way of the Arts Council of Northern Eire. Though I’d argue that the 16-minute lengthy movie, screened in a loop, can be immersive in itself, the presentation, or set up is deliberate as a multisensory expertise. I need to interact as many senses as doable, sight, sound, spatial consciousness, motion and contact. The footage is made up of 4 video poems, every representing a component – air, water, earth, fireplace, with animation, screened in a loop, on three large screens at Armagh Planetarium. The movie screening is a part of an exhibition on local weather change. A globe is in the midst of the room the place by way of contact management, the viewers can discover the planets of our photo voltaic system. Can we depart this planet and go on the market? Exploring them it’s the extra superb that solely our blue planet has life as we all know it. Our treasured Earth.
I’m glad because the Planetarium has each day visits of college kids and faculty college students in huge numbers, and maybe, this art work can increase as a lot consciousness as the data within the Copernicus Corridor on the ground: maps that present us how flooded Northern Eire will likely be in 2100 – the Titanic Museum will likely be underneath water. One other sinking forecast? I gained’t be right here to see it, however my grandchildren would possibly and I want them a greater future.
Ec(h)o will likely be on the programme of the Planetarium from twentieth April till twelfth Might. I’ll have an artist speak on Saturday twenty seventh at 1pm. Hope to see you there.
