SpaceX will launch Europe’s Hera spacecraft towards the asteroid Dimorphos for a post-impact analysis on Monday (Oct. 7), and you may watch the liftoff dwell.

The European Area Company‘s Hera mission will go to Dimorphos — the asteroid that NASA’s DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Take a look at) spacecraft knocked off track in September 2022. Dimorphos is a moonlet of the near-Earth asteroid Didymos. The binary asteroid system was beforehand visited by NASA’s DART spacecraft, which deliberately collided with Dimorphos in 2022 and altered its orbit round Didymos as an indication of a planetary protection approach designed to vary the trajectory of a doubtlessly hazardous asteroid.
