The European Area Company‘s Hera mission will go to Dimorphos — the asteroid that NASA’s DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Take a look at) spacecraft knocked off track in September 2022. Hera will assess the aftermath of that affect and examine each the floor and inside construction of the asteroid in better element.

The primary Hera spacecraft and its two accomplice cubesats, named Milani and Juventas, are set to launch atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Monday (Oct. 7) at 10:52 a.m. EDT (1452 GMT) from Cape Canaveral Area Power Station in Florida. Dimorphos is a moonlet of the near-Earth asteroid Didymos. The binary asteroid system was beforehand visited by NASA’s DART spacecraft, which deliberately collided with Dimorphos in 2022 and altered its orbit round Didymos as an indication of a planetary protection approach designed to vary the trajectory of a doubtlessly hazardous asteroid.

If all goes nicely, Hera will arrive at Dimorphos in late 2026. The spacecraft will consider the scale and depth of the crater created by DART, in addition to the effectivity of the affect.
