SpaceX on Sunday efficiently “caught” its “Tremendous Heavy” booster on its first try throughout a flight check, a primary for the corporate and its strongest spacecraft.

Starship lifted off from its launch tower into clear morning skies from the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, at 7:25 a.m. CT with all 33 of its Raptor engines firing flawlessly.

Seven minutes into the flight check and after separating from the Starship’s car, the rocket booster was efficiently caught for the primary time ever in “Mechazilla,” a mechanism with chopstick-like arms on a tower on the launch pad. SpaceX workers cheered because the booster descended onto Mechazilla with 13 engines burning earlier than finally being caught with three engines burning.

“The tower has caught the rocket!!,” SpaceX Founder Elon Musk posted on X with a clip of the second the booster was caught.

Starship, which was crewless, coasted in area for almost 45 minutes earlier than splashing down within the Indian Ocean at 9:30 a.m. CT an hour and 5 minutes into the flight check. A flash from the spacecraft as soon as it landed within the ocean was seen on SpaceX’s livestream of the car’s reentry.

“Ship landed exactly on track! Second of two goals achieved,” Musk stated in another post on X with a clip of Starship touchdown within the ocean.

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas is seen over the hills near the village of Aguas Blancas, Lavalleja Department, Uruguay, at dawn on Sept. 28.

The success of the flight is a major step for the corporate because it goals to at some point use Starship to hold astronauts and provides into Earth’s orbit, in addition to onto the Moon and planets reminiscent of Mars. The most important rocket ever constructed, Starship is 397 toes tall, together with the rocket booster, which SpaceX says is “absolutely reusable.”

Important enhancements have been made to the spacecraft since its first launch in April 2023, when the rocket exploded shortly after liftoff. Starship’s heatshield was reworked, SpaceX says: Its thermal safety system was changed with newer tiles and included further protections between the flaps and a backup layer.

SpaceX was not attempting to recuperate the spacecraft and was trying to show that it might deliver Starship right down to its goal beneath management.

Sunday’s launch additionally comes amid a backdrop of concern concerning the environmental impression the flight exams are having on the areas across the launchpad.

NPR’s Geoff Brumfiel contributed to this report.
