That information will enable satellites to be steered away from the trail of the particles, Bernhardt stated, including that operators of the Starlink system take extra 20,000 collision avoidance actions per 12 months.

The brand new detection technique was detailed in a Jan. 8 paper in Physics of Plasmas. Bengt Eliasson of the College of Strathclyde in Nice Britain is the lead writer.

The work is a part of a U.S. authorities effort to trace area particles. It was carried out in collaboration with contractor Blue Halo within the IARPA Area Particles Identification and Monitoring program.
