My father, USAF Senior Grasp Sergeant Robert E.
Hastings, was stationed at Malmstrom AFB, Montana in 1966-67 and labored
within the SAGE (Semi-Computerized Floor Atmosphere) constructing which housed
the bottom’s subtle, NORAD-integrated radar facility. As some
former members of the twenty ninth Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (FIS) primarily based at
Malmstrom will recall, there have been a number of scrambles throughout that period
involving intercept makes an attempt of “unknown targets” that had been being
tracked on radar as they maneuvered close to and/or hovered above varied
Minuteman nuclear missile websites scattered throughout the encompassing
countryside.

I possess a pretend twenty ninth FIS uniform patch,
impishly created by a former squadron member, which includes a strange-looking creature seated within the
cockpit of a fighter and the caption “Land

participated in throughout these years.

In the midst of my 38-year analysis venture on the UFO-Nukes Connection, I
have interviewed retired Air Power and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
radar operators who tracked UFOs at Malmstrom and different USAF bases. Within the
late Nineteen Sixties, Grover Austad labored as an FAA controller at Malmstrom’s SAGE
constructing. In a phone interview performed in December 2003, he described
one such incident:

“One evening this object got here on the radar and it was transferring at great
velocity,” he stated, “We estimated that it was flying about 2,400 mph. Now, the
controllers who labored at SAGE knew concerning the SR-71—regardless that it was nonetheless
secret. However this factor, no matter it was, was even quicker than that.” (The
SR-71 “Blackbird” nonetheless holds the official file because the world’s quickest
jet—at 2,193 mph—a velocity achieved throughout a short-duration, straight-course
flight on July 28, 1976.)

Austad continued,

“So I referred to as ADC—that’s Air Protection Command—to see if they’d it too. The
controller I talked to stated, ‘Yeah, I see it, however UFOs don’t exist, do they?’
Then he laughed sarcastically. The item performed round for a couple of minutes. It
zigzagged back-and-forth, masking a whole bunch of miles. Then it disappeared off
the scope.”

Austad stated that this monitoring, and comparable ones that he solely heard about,
involving different controllers at Malmstrom, had been formally logged by the FAA
controllers after which reported to the ADC radar unit at SAGE. “We all the time instructed
them about what we noticed [on radar], however they by no means gave us any suggestions.”

Describing a special incident, one other retired FAA controller who labored at
Malmstrom’s Radar Method and Management (RAPCON) middle, Paul Selley, instructed me,

“Yeah, I used to be on that evening after we tracked the UFOs. There have been 5 of them.
We tracked them for a short while after which they simply disappeared. They had been
transferring actually quick—they went throughout the display very quickly. At first, we
thought it may need been some high-altitude plane that the Air Power was
testing, however to have 5 targets on the display directly, that rationalization
wasn’t too sensible.”

After I requested Selley to estimate what number of occasions UFOs had been tracked at RAPCON
through the interval that he labored there, he instantly responded,

“It wasn’t simply as soon as. I used to be on a number of occasions after we picked them up. It was
strictly at evening, often between 7 o’clock and 11 o’clock. Now, a few of [the
incidents] may need been through the midnight shift—I labored all of them—however I
don’t recall any throughout that point, however there may need been some. I don’t
bear in mind monitoring them within the daytime.”

After I requested Selley to explain precisely how the UFOs appeared on radar, he
stated,

“Impulsively, they’d simply pop-up out of nowhere and cross our screens
in just some seconds. They had been so quick that you simply couldn’t take your eye off
them or they’d be gone. We’d name [the Air Force] to seek out out if they’d [any
of their own aircraft] up, however they by no means did.”

Referring to the Air Protection Command radar operators working at Malmstrom’s
SAGE constructing, he added,

“We heard rumors that they had been monitoring the objects too, however each time we
requested them about it, they’d simply clam-up and wouldn’t confirm it.
Generally, they’d declare that we had been simply monitoring false targets, however they
by no means would verify that we had been monitoring UFOs.”

Regardless of these denials, Selley stated that he and the opposite controllers all held
the identical opinion concerning the nature of the unknown targets.

“We thought that they had been [bona fide] UFOs,” he stated, “We didn’t have
something that might transfer throughout the display as quick as they did. They had been
transferring at 1000’s of miles per hour, quicker than the SR-71.”

Selley recommended that I name O.P. “Pote” Morrow, who labored as a supervisor at
RAPCON from 1967 to 1980. Initially, Morrow stated that he didn’t bear in mind any
incidents when UFOs had been tracked on radar at Malmstrom. Nonetheless, once I
talked about that I had labored as a teen-aged janitor at RAPCON in 1966-67 and
had as soon as been instructed by one of many controllers that Air Power jet interceptors
had been scrambled to intercept 5 UFOs, he interrupted me and stated,

“You recognize, you’ve stroke a chord in my memory. Now that you simply’ve talked about it, I do recall
one thing about fighters being despatched up one time to chase unknown targets. They
went southwest, however after they obtained on the market, they couldn’t see something. They
had been vectored proper to the spot however nothing was there.”

Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites - www.theufochronicles.com

Whether or not Morrow or anybody else with the FAA knew it or not, Air Power radar
controllers at Malmstrom later reported that the 5 unknowns—which had been
truly southeast, not southwest of the bottom—had ascended vertically at excessive
velocity because the jets approached their place. This incident is described in
higher element in my e-book UFOs and
Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites, which is accessible at my web site.

For no matter cause, in contrast to Austad and Selley, Morrow’s demeanor was guarded
and at occasions evasive. His declare that fighters had solely been scrambled “one
time” through the prolonged interval of his employment at RAPCON is solely unfaithful,
based on others in-the-know. For instance, once I referred to as one other former FAA
controller, “Bud” Kittleson, to ask about UFOs being tracked at RAPCON and
SAGE, he stated,

“There have been objects that had been unknown that had been tracked on radar out close to
Lewistown, and a few nearer to Nice Falls. There have been some events the place
[the Air Force] did scramble plane out of Nice Falls. So far as I do know,
nothing was discovered.”

Kittleson stated he didn’t bear in mind an incident when 5 unknowns had been
concurrently tracked. Nonetheless, considerably, he did acknowledge that
fighters had been launched from Malmstrom to intercept UFOs
on multiple event. Additionally noteworthy is his reference to
Lewistown, Montana, situated not far south of Echo and Oscar Flights, the place
credible studies by former Minuteman missile launch officers say that UFOs
had been concerned in
missile shutdown incidents in March 1967. That stated, there may be at the moment no proof accessible to hyperlink these circumstances
with the trackings described by Kittleson.

One other retired controller, Joe Weinzetl, instructed me,

“There have been a few occasions when Jerry Webster and I tracked unknown objects
transferring at excessive speeds. I bear in mind we estimated that one among them was touring
round 1,700 miles per hour. It was at high-altitude and solely appeared on our
display for about 20 seconds. On one other event, Paul [Selley] was there with
me after we tracked one. At any time when one thing like that occurred, we referred to as the
[FAA] In-Route Visitors Management Middle and instructed them about it. However that’s the place
we left it. We by no means heard something again as soon as we reported it.”

Declassified U.S. authorities paperwork referring to those sorts of incidents
are comparatively uncommon. Nonetheless, one Air Power letter launched by way of the Freedom of
Data Act—containing North American Aerospace Protection Command (NORAD)
log entries describing UFO incursions at Malmstrom’s missile websites in November
1975—refers back to the radar monitoring of the objects, which subsequently performed
cat-and-mouse with the F-106 jet fighters despatched as much as chase them. A number of of the
log entries observe right here—a few of them adopted by my very own feedback in brackets:

twenty fourth NORAD Area Senior Director’s Log (Malmstrom AFB, MT)

7 Nov 75 (1035Z) Obtained a name from the 341st Strategic Air Command Submit
(SAC CP), saying that the next missile areas reported seeing a big
pink to orange to yellow object: M-1, L-3, LIMA, and L-6…Commander and Deputy
for Operations (DO) knowledgeable.

7 Nov 75 (1203Z) SAC suggested that the
LCF at Harlowton, Montana, noticed an object which emitted a light-weight which
illuminated the positioning driveway.

7 Nov 75 (1319Z) SAC suggested Ok-1
says very brilliant object to their east is now southeast of them and they’re
it with 10×50 binoculars. Object appears to have lights (a number of) on
it, however no distinct sample. The orange/gold object overhead additionally appears to
have lights on it. SAC additionally suggested feminine civilian studies having seen an
object bearing south of her place six miles west of Lewistown. [RH: Note
that all of these reports refer to the observation of aerial “objects.”
Apparently, the Security Alert Teams could not identify them as either
military or civilian aircraft.]

7 Nov 75 (1327Z) L-1 studies that
the article to their northeast appears to be issuing a black object from it,
tubular in form. In all this time, surveillance [radar] has not been capable of
detect any form of monitor aside from recognized site visitors. [RH: In other words, when
these sightings were first reported by SATs, radar personnel at Malmstrom AFB
and Great Falls International Airport could not detect any unknown aerial
objects near the missile sites. As we shall see, radar contact with the UFOs
was finally established as the sightings continued to unfold.]

8
Nov 75 (0635Z) A safety camper crew at Ok-4 reported UFO with white lights,
one pink mild 50 yards behind white mild. Personnel at Ok-1 seeing identical
object.

8 Nov 75 (0645Z) Top personnel picked up objects
10-13,000 ft. Monitor J330, EKLB 0649, 18 knots, 9,500 ft. Objects as many
as seven, as few as two A/C. [RH: Height-finding radar finally confirmed that
UFOs were present, varying over time between two and seven in number.]

8
Nov 75 (0753Z) J330 unknown 0753. Stationary/seven knots/12,000…two
F-106…NCOC notified. [RH: Radar confirmed that one UFO, at an altitude of
12,000 feet, had hovered—that is, was “stationary”—before resuming flight at a
leisurely 7 knots, or 9 mph. Shortly thereafter, two F-106s were scrambled to
intercept it.]

8 Nov 75 (0905Z) From SAC CP: L-sites had fighters
and objects; fighters didn’t get down to things.

8 Nov 75 (0915Z)
From SAC CP: From 4 totally different factors: Noticed objects and fighters; when
fighters arrived within the space, the lights went out; when fighters departed, the
lights got here again on; To NCOC. [RH: As SAT personnel at four different
locations watched, the UFOs played cat-and-mouse with the F-106s,
extinguishing their illumination as the jets approached their position and
re-illuminating themselves after the fighters returned to base. The NORAD
Combat Operations Center (NCOC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado was immediately
informed of this incident.]

8 Nov 75 (1105Z) From SAC CP: L-5
reported object elevated in velocity — excessive velocity, raised in altitude and now
can’t inform the article from stars. To NCOC.

9 Nov 75 (0305Z) SAC
CP referred to as and suggested SAC crews at Websites L-1, L-6, and M-1 observing UFO.
Object yellowish brilliant spherical mild 20 miles north of Harlowton, 2 to 4,000
ft.

9 Nov 75 (0320Z) SAC CP studies UFO southeast of Lewistown,
orange white disc object. twenty fourth NORAD Area surveillance checking space.
Surveillance unable to get peak examine. [RH: Note the reference to the UFO
having a “disc” or saucer shape. Two more log entries from November 9th
confirm that UFOs continued to be reported by SAT teams positioned near
various missile launch facilities. Then the action moved from Malmstrom to
Minot AFB, in North Dakota.]

10 Nov 75 (1125Z) UFO sighting
reported by Minot Air Power Station, a brilliant star-like object within the west,
transferring east, concerning the dimension of a automobile…the article handed over the radar
station, 1,000 to 2,000 ft excessive, no noise heard…NCOC notified.

END OF NORAD LOG ENTRIES

In conclusion, UFOs had been tracked by each USAF and FAA radar operators at
Malmstrom AFB through the Chilly Battle period. My “UFO-Nukes Connection” press
convention in Washington D.C. final September included the participation of seven
former or retired USAF personnel who described UFO exercise on the ICBM websites
outdoors of Malmstrom and different SAC bases within the ’60s and ’70s. CNN streamed the
occasion reside. The video of the press convention is right here.
