Area Botany, Station Repairs, and Departure Prep for Crew on Friday – Area Station
Expedition 69 Flight Engineers (from left) Jasmin Moghbeli, Loral O’Hara, and Frank Rubio, all NASA astronauts, pose for a portrait aboard the Worldwide Area Station’s Unity module. All three crew members had been chosen as a part of the NASA astronaut class of 2017.

Friday sees a busy day for the Expedition 69 crew forward of their off-duty weekend aboard the International Space Station. Making ready for upcoming crew departures and October spacewalks, well being exams, and house gardening topped the ten crew members’ analysis schedules at the moment.

Flight Engineer Jasmin Moghbeli of NASA began her day with orbital plumbing and upkeep on the EXPRESS racks, payloads used for storing analysis experiments. After lunch, she continued station maintenance duties, eradicating and troubleshooting lights and inspecting the station’s cupola, or “window to the world.” Later within the day, Moghbeli was joined as soon as once more by ESA (European Area Company) astronaut Andreas Mogensen and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Company) Flight Engineer Satoshi Furukawa for one more spherical of eye exams.

Mogensen then moved into some house gardening, harvesting the ultimate spherical of Arabidopsis crops, a part of the Plant Habitat-03 investigation. The experiment goals to assist researchers higher perceive how diversifications of crops in a single era may switch to the subsequent, given the environmental stress of the microgravity atmosphere. Analysis as such offers an array of scientific knowledge that may be utilized on future house missions.

Forward of eye exams, Furukawa spent his morning within the Kibo Laboratory Module, putting in stable combustion into the Multipurpose Payload Rack, analysis of this magnitude serving to enhance gasoline effectivity and fireplace security each on orbit and on Earth.

Flight Engineer Loral O’Hara of NASA was joined by Mogensen and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio within the morning to switch batteries and set up restraint straps and helmet lights to spacesuits in preparation for a spherical of U.S. spacewalks in October.

After spacesuit upkeep, Rubio was joined by Commander Sergey Prokopyev and Flight Engineer Dmitiri Petelin of Roscosmos to coach on descent of the Soyuz spacecraft they’ll take residence in just some quick days. After spending over a 12 months in house, the three long-serving residents will undock from the station’s Prichal Module at 3:55 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, Sept. 27. Following a fast experience again residence, they may land in Kazakhstan at 7:17 a.m.

The three different crew members of Roscosmos cut up up orbital duties at the moment. Flight Engineer Konstantin Borisov performed upkeep actions within the Nauka module, whereas Oleg Kononenko donned a sensor-packed cap to follow piloting strategies and discover how spacecraft will be managed on future planetary missions as a part of the continued Pilot-T investigation. Powered on earlier this week, the EarthKam—a digital digital camera mounted on the station that’s remotely managed by college students to take pictures of Earth—was shut off and stowed for future use by Flight Engineer Nikolai Chub.
