Claro noticed the prominence fastidiously over these two days, capturing photographs that he then stitched collectively right into a timelapse video exhibiting the characteristic’s habits and evolution.

“The ultimate result’s a 4K high-resolution photo voltaic film comprising round 2.5 hours for every day, with a complete of 5 hours of photographs,” he wrote.

“In accordance with my measurements in pixels, the dimensions of this prominence … was about 10x the dimensions [of] our planet Earth, in peak, however stretching across the solar’s limb for 1000’s of kilometers,” Claro added.

One of many prominence pictures — the one featured because the lead picture for this story — was acknowledged by the Royal Observatory of Greenwich’s Astronomy Photographer of the 12 months 2022 competitors, he stated; the picture obtained a “Highly Commended” distinction within the contest’s “Our Solar” class.

Claro captured the timelapse video from Portugal’s Alqueva Darkish Sky Reserve utilizing a QUY5III174M digital camera and a Sky-Watcher Esprit 120ED Skilled telescope with a Daystar Quark Prominence filter.
