An Electron rocket topped with considered one of Japanese firm Synspective’s Strix-3 satellites is scheduled to carry off from Rocket Lab’s New Zealand launch website on Tuesday throughout an hour-long window that opens at 10:13 a.m. EDT (1413 GMT; 3:13 a.m. native New Zealand time on March 13).

Rocket Lab calls Tuesday’s mission “Owl Evening Lengthy” in a nod to Synspective’s Strix household of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellites, which shares its identify with a genus of owls.

The Strix spacecraft “can picture millimeter-level modifications to the Earth’s floor from area, unbiased of climate situations at any time day or evening,” Rocket Lab wrote in an “Owl Evening Lengthy” mission description, which you’ll find here.

“Owl Evening Lengthy” will likely be Rocket Lab’s fourth launch for Synspective. The opposite three missions for the Earth-imaging firm launched in December 2020, February 2022 and September 2022.

Strix-3 is headed for a sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) 348.6 miles (561 kilometers) above Earth, in keeping with Rocket Lab.

Satellites in SSOs see the identical patch of floor on the similar photo voltaic time daily, which means that lighting situations are constant and modifications on Earth’s floor will be detected extra simply. For that reason, these orbits are standard locations for climate and reconnaissance satellites.

If all goes in keeping with plan, the Electron will deploy Strix-3 into its meant orbit about 54 minutes after launch.

There apparently will not be any motion within the downward course on Tuesday. Rocket Lab is working to make Electron’s first stage reusable and has recovered boosters on a variety of earlier missions. However the firm’s “Owl Evening Lengthy” mission description does not point out something about restoration actions.
